Backhoe loader: what it does, when to rent one and how to get a quote

The backhoe loader is the most common machine on urban jobs: it digs, loads, backfills and drives along the street on tires. This guide explains what it does, when to rent it with an operator and how to ask for a quote without surprises.

01What a backhoe loader is

It's a tractor with two tools: at the front, a loader with a wide bucket to move and load material; at the back, an excavator arm with a narrow bucket to dig trenches and pits. Because it runs on tires it can travel short distances on the street, which a tracked excavator can't.

02Typical jobs

  • Trenches for water, sewer or conduit lines.
  • Footings, cisterns, septic pits and manholes.
  • Loading material onto dump trucks.
  • Backfill and leveling with the front bucket.
  • Light demolition and debris removal.
  • Lot clearing: brush, trash and loose material.

03What to expect from a 580-class machine

For reference, the manufacturer lists for the Case 580 Super N a maximum digging depth of about 4.4 meters (14.5 ft) with the standard dipper — more with the extendable one — and a standard front bucket of about 0.8 m³ (1 cu yd). Figures vary by version and equipment: each unit's spec sheet is what counts.

04With or without an operator?

For a one-off job, with an operator is almost always better: they know the machine, work faster, know how to protect buried utilities and are responsible for the equipment on site. At BAPO we rent the backhoe with its operator.

05How it's billed

OptionWhen it makes sense
HourlyShort, one-off tasks. A minimum number of hours per service is usually agreed.
DailyWhen the job takes most of the working day.
Weekly or monthlyLong jobs where the machine stays assigned.

Besides time, the price depends on transport of the machine, soil type (fill, clay, rock), depth, access and whether excavated material has to be loaded onto a truck.

06What to prepare before it arrives

  1. Make sure it fits: gate width and height of cables, branches or roofs.
  2. Locate water, sewer and gas pipes, and tell us about nearby power lines.
  3. Mark the limits of what will be dug.
  4. Decide where material goes or whether it's loaded onto a truck.
  5. If working on the street, have the applicable permit at hand.
  6. Keep people out of the machine's swing radius.

07How to ask for a quote

The clearer the job, the more accurate the quote. Send on WhatsApp: what needs doing, where (exact location), rough measurements, photos of the site and access and by when.

Frequently asked questions

Can a backhoe dig through rock?

It can break hard material up to a point; solid rock needs a hydraulic hammer or other equipment. Send us photos of the ground.

How much can it do in a day?

It depends on the soil, the depth and whether material must be loaded onto a truck. That's why we quote after seeing the job, not with a fixed figure.

Can it work on the street?

Yes, with the required signage and, when applicable, a permit from the municipality or the water utility.
